Net Investigation

This morning, we’ve extended our learning from yesterday by investigating how many different ways we can combine six squares to create a net of a cube.  We also found lots of ways to join six squares that don’t make a net of a cube!

Modelling Mayhem!

This afternoon in class we are experimenting with bulbs, motors and wires…we are making circuits.  We are also modelling and building our machines that we have created.  We have cardboard boxes, wooden sticks and many more materials to make our machines.  Our machines are inspired by William Heath Robinson, who drew complex inventions.

Building 3D Shapes

This morning, we explored 3D shapes, thinking about their properties and the 2D shapes we could see on their faces.  After that, we tried to build them using straws and plasticine.

We then learnt about nets of 3D shapes and Ms Boxall challenged us to draw nets of cubes and other 3D shapes.  We only found out if our nets were accurate when we tried to build the shapes.

Later this week, we are going to use this learning to help us build our prototype models of the inventions we have been designing.

 

Bridge Building Challenge!

On our first morning as a new Year 5 team, members of 5W and 5M came together to try to build the strongest bridge possible…using only cardboard!

We had a great time and found out a lot about how folding can strengthen a material.  We also practised our maths skills whilst adding and subtracting weights.  Recording our results in tables meant that we could analyse our results and find out which structure was the strongest.
