Minibeast Detectives!

As part of our Mother Earth topic, Reception went on an Educational Visit to the Centre for Wildlife Gardening. We had a great time scavenger hunting, searching for Minibeasts and pond dipping!

In our groups, we went on a Scavenger Hunt to find the following things:IMG_3448 IMG_3443 IMG_3444 IMG_3445 IMG_3447 IMG_3450 IMG_3452 IMG_3453 IMG_3454 IMG_3459

Sylvia showed us how to safely dip for pond life!  IMG_3464 IMG_3465We put the contents of our net into a white tray so we could look carefully at what we had caught.  IMG_3466 - CopyWe knelt down as we leaned into the pond in order to stay safe! IMG_3502 IMG_3470 IMG_3472 IMG_3483We found a Horse Leech! IMG_3485 IMG_3487IMG_3496IMG_3497IMG_3498IMG_3500IMG_3499IMG_3501IMG_3509IMG_3510IMG_3513IMG_3515IMG_3516IMG_4335

Bug Hunting!  IMG_3494We lifted up rocks and logs and dug with spoons to find creatures lurking in the ground! IMG_3495IMG_3477IMG_4337IMG_3478IMG_3493We put the creatures carefully into a magnifying pot so that we could look at them more closely. When we had finished observing them, we put them all back where we found them. IMG_3504IMG_3518 IMG_3519

We played a game of catch the moth. The blindfolded bat had to listen carefully for the sounds of the moth in order to catch it!  IMG_3521 IMG_3525 IMG_4348 IMG_4355 IMG_4356

Here are some of the creatures we found:IMG_3480A Freshwater Shrimp

Superhero Mission Day!

To end this term’s topic on Heroes and Villains we all dressed up as Superheroes for Superhero Mission Day!

Throughout the week, we have been receiving messages from Spider-Man; he needed our help because the Super Moon had stolen the Super Powers from all of the Superheroes. It was our mission to fly to the Super Moon and retrieve them!  IMG_3910

We wrote lists of our own Superpowers….. IMG_3913 IMG_3914 IMG_3915 IMG_3916 IMG_3917

Rino made her own Superhero hat!  IMG_3918

Kiki made a Superhero Jet Pack!IMG_4027

Before we flew to the Super Moon, we needed to exercise our senses. We used our sense of smell to try to work out the different smells (mint; coffee; lemon; vinegar and vanilla).IMG_3921 IMG_3922 IMG_3923 IMG_3924 IMG_3925 IMG_3926 IMG_3929 IMG_3930 IMG_3931 IMG_3932

We then exercised our sense of taste by describing and trying to name the fruit.  IMG_3933 IMG_3934 IMG_3935 IMG_3936 IMG_3937 IMG_3938 IMG_3939 IMG_3940 IMG_3941 IMG_3943

Not long now….. passports at the ready….  IMG_3944 IMG_3945 IMG_3946 IMG_3948 IMG_3949

We entered our spaceship through a dark tunnel….  IMG_3950 IMG_3952

…… and picked up a piece of magic space rock that would help us to fly into space!  IMG_3955 IMG_3957 IMG_3958 IMG_3960 IMG_3963 IMG_3964 IMG_3966 IMG_3968

Ready for blast off!  IMG_3970 IMG_3972

When we arrived at the Super Moon we had to locate two Space Creatures that contained all of the stolen super powers.  IMG_3974

After we found them, we each whispered ‘Superpowers’ into their ears……  IMG_3985 IMG_3986 IMG_3987 IMG_3988 IMG_3989 IMG_3990

Suddenly, the Space Creatures stopped changing colour, which meant that the superpowers had been released. We did it; we got back the Super Powers for the Superheroes!  IMG_3992

Disembarking!  IMG_3994 IMG_3999 IMG_4002

After lunch, we came back to find different sized footprints in our classroom and a voice message from the Joker saying he’d taken our beloved Polly!  IMG_4005 IMG_4006

We had to measure each of the footprints to work out which were the Joker’s so that we could follow the correct ones to rescue Polly…..

IMG_4007 IMG_4009 IMG_4010 IMG_4011 IMG_4012 IMG_4013

After measuring all of the footprints and working out which to follow, Ezra and Rafael were first to find Polly!  IMG_4018 IMG_4019

We were all very pleased to have Polly back safely! IMG_4030

We wrote to the Joker to tell him we’d beaten him and we’d found Polly!IMG_4031 IMG_4035 IMG_4036

At the end of our busy day we had a visit from Spider-Man who thanked us for successfully completing the mission and getting the Superheroes their powers back! He gave each of us a Superhero Medal! A visit from the Funky Fairy

Reception HT were visited by the Funky Fairy who guided the children on an adventure to find the stolen book of fairy tales. They travelled through the enchanted forest to the villainous Red Queen’s castle.  All the children were heroes as they found the book and returned it to the Funky Fairy. It was a fantastic way to explore the characteristics of heroes and villains.

The Christmas Star

This half-term Reception’s topic has been ‘Up Above and Down Below’.  We have read lots of stories on this theme, and our learning inspired us to create a show that included some of the characters we have encountered, such as teddies and aliens. We spent a lot of time practising our singing and acting, and talking about how we could make our performance special for the audience.  On Wednesday 7th December, we performed our Nativity production “The Christmas Star”.

Some children were decorating the tree for Christmas, but where is the star for the top of the tree?
They asked some fireworks if they had seen the Christmas Star, but the fireworks hadn’t.
The aliens had not seen the Christmas Star either.
Finally, they asked some teddy bears who were having a picnic on the moon if they had seen the Christmas Star. The teddy bears had not seen the Christmas Star.
The children returned to their decorations box and inside they found a Nativity scene. A star led the way to the newborn baby Jesus.
Finally the children had found the star for the top of the Christmas tree!

We are so proud of the final performance. Thank you to everyone who came along to support us.

Our Visit to Greenwich Observatory

As part of our topic Up above and down below, we visited the Greenwich Observatory. We found out lots of facts about space, and then went on an imaginary rocket to the moon!

On the bus to Greenwich Park.img_0023

We helped Ted to find the great big bear in the sky.  We found out lots of facts about the planets in our solar system.

img_0011Then, we had some time to play in Greenwich Park.

We went in a rocket to the moon.  We went moon-walking and collected moon-rocks.

We had a fantastic day in Greenwich, and have been excited to share our knowledge of space back at school.  Thank you to all of our parent and carer helpers, who helped make the day a great success!
