Ice Cube Experiment

In the experiment we used five insulation materials: Foil Newspaper J-cloth Clingfilm Tissue and we got five ice cubes too. Then in the experiment we had to wrap the ice cubes and we had to wait for 15 minutes and then we had to measure the ice cubes and then we had to wrap them and wait 15 minutes again.

In year 5 we have been conducting science experiments to find out what would be the best insulator for Ernest Shackleton’s lunchbox, while he was on his expedition to Antarctica. The materials used were foil, newspaper, cling film, tissue and J-Cloth. To start we gathered five ice cubes and wrapped each ice cube in a different material. After fifteen minutes we unwrapped them and measured their length in mm.

After another fifteen minutes had passed we started the whole process of unwrapping and measuring again. The results of this experiment was that foil was the best insulator. The reason for this is that foil is one of the densest materials, therefore it can hold in the cold air for a longer amount of time. For homework we had to find five different heat sources and five different insulators in our homes. Some of these were lightbulbs, candles and insulating foam in roofs. I think I am a better scientist because I now know how to layout my science explanations properly. You begin with the aim then the prediction, apparatus, method, results and finish with the conclusion.

I have really enjoyed learning about insulators and I hope that my later science experiments will be as enjoyable.

We have also been doing it so that we will know which material is the most insulated.

Foil was the best insulated material because it had the highest measurement.

Clingfilm was the second best insulated material.

In year 5, we have been learning about the best insulator out of j-cloth, tissue, foil, Clingfilm, newspaper and these 5 insulators, we have been investigating the best one because Ernest Shackleton was the first man to go to South Pole with his group.  They studied about the wild life and what species there where but the best thing they done was playing with the snow, they mostly checked the temperature because it was very odd to all of them and why is that crazy.  It is always super cold! Anyway if he was going to eat and his food was going cold he should use the best insulator. It would be thermal foil because it keeps food warm for the longest time.

Our experiment’s aim is to discover which material is the best material to insulate Sir Ernest Shackleton’s lunchbox when he goes on his expedition to the Antarctic. The material competing are tin foil, cling film, tissue, J-cloth and newspaper.

Everybody thought the best insulator would be tin foil, as during the swimming fire drill, we used foil blankets. For our experiment we used a strip of each material and a few extra strips of tissue and newspaper as they are affected by the water. It is a good idea to use a tray underneath the ice cubes, so the table does not become flooded. When we had the ice cubes, we had to work fast, due to the fact that our hands are warm, so they will melt the ice cubes faster, making it an unfair test. Insulating is keeping something the same temperature, so the materials had to hold the cold in.

For the last few weeks year 5 has been learning about the best the Insulating material. Year 5 done an ice cube an experiment.  We had to wrap the ice cubes in different materials and we had to leave them in for 15 mins and then after 15 min we measured the ice cube. After another 15 mins you measured the best ice cube again. In English we had to explain what we had to do in the experiment. We watched a video about Ernest Shackleton he was the first man to visit the discover the South Pole. We had to label his lunch box and what he would put in his lunch box. We labelled what would be in his lunch box and we drew a picture of what we done in the experiment. Ernest Shackleton had to bring warm stuff in his lunch box like soup, hot chocolate, and tea. Ernest Shackleton had to bring a lunch box that had to be made from an insulating material.

On Wednesday we did science. We did an experiment using cling film, tin foil, tissue, newspaper and j-cloth. We have been doing this for around 2 weeks so we know what to do. This is what we did. First we the watched a video about Ernest Shackleton (the first man to travel to Antarctica.)  We decided to make a lunch box. After that we estimated witch material would be the best at insulating his lunch box.

After we recorded the sizes of each ice cube we created a line graph to show which ice cube melted the fastest showing us what the best insulating material. After we finished our line graph we published what we did and the process what we did like the Method, Aims, Prediction, Apparatus, Results and the Conclusion. After we had published our work and being hopeful that we hadn’t messed up at all or then we would have to go and do it all again, we made sure that in the conclusion we showed what we thought about the results.

Insulation means to keep the temperature the same, here is an example if you had a cup full of hot chocolate you want the hot chocolate to be the same temperature, so you would need a cup that has a different material for the cup.
