Turtles and tortoises

We have been reading One Tiny Turtle by Nicola Davies to help us answer the question “What does a turtle need to do to stay alive?”

We absolutely love this book! It is unique as it is both an information and story book, which follows the adventures of Loggerhead the turtle. Amongst other things, we found out:

  • Turtles are weightless in water but heavier than a man on land.
  • Very few baby turtles reach the ocean before becoming prey.
  • Turtles eat crabs, shrimps and other small sea creatures.
  • Sharks eat turtles.

We are extremely lucky, as Loggerhead’s land-loving cousin Margie the tortoise came to visit us in Reception C. We observed her moving around the carpet and even touched her shell.

We would like to say a huge “Thanks!” to Barnaby who is a Reception C parent and Margie’s owner. Meeting a real tortoise was an experience we’ll always remember.

What are the similarities and differences between a tortoise and a turtle?
