Year 5’s Educational Visit to Crofton Roman Villa

On Wednesday, Year 5 ventured deep into the London suburbs to visit the remains of a Roman villa in Orpington.

Although the excavated site inside a large shed did not quite live up to some people’s rather more grand idea of a “villa”, the visit nonetheless was a fascinating day full of learning. We met a REAL archaeologist who actually helped to uncover the remains of the villa 30 years ago and had fun creating mosaic patterns, handling artefacts including animal jaws and precious pottery from the Roman “rubbish tip” found at the back of the site and dressing up in togas and tunics. Even the rain didn’t dampen our delight!
