Housing Action
This week, Mr Absolom and 12 members of the school council attended a Housing Action Assembly, which took place outside City Hall.
For the school councillors, this was the culmination of a set of workshops, run by UCL undergraduates, which took place last half term. Within these sessions the children focused on the issue of housing and what constitutes a safe and healthy environment to grow up in. The children's work is included in the Housing Action report, which can be downloaded below.
This week's Housing Action saw the children from several Lewisham schools coming together to raise the issue of inadequate housing and the poor conditions that too many children and their families have to endure. One of the most shocking statistics from the day is that 1:23 children in London are classified as 'homeless'. We also heard testimony from children about being bitten by rats in their own homes. Surely, this cannot be acceptable in 21st century London?
Listening to the children's thoughts and experiences was one of London's Deputy Mayors, Tom Copley. Mr Copley accepted a copy of the report (available below) and has since agreed to a face to face meeting with community representatives. We will keep you posted regarding future progress.
